Because I promised I would confess publically

October 31, 2007, 12:59 pm

I was back in Calgary for one of those way-too-short micro-visits. Ostensibly, it was to attend a conference for young entrepreneurs held by the Canada West Foundation (very informative, though I was a bit of an odd ball, in a room filled with market analysts, real estate developers/managers, financial planners, and lawyers), but it was also a chance to visit with the family (which got 50% cuter and 73% more hilarious since the niece arrived on the scene.)

I was buying a to-go with Andy when he got a call that the baby was up, and needed transport to a nearby baby shower.

“What’s the plan?” I says

“Well, first I’m going to go pick up the Protege…”

“Progeny.”

“What?”

“You’re talking about your progeny, the baby, not protege.”

“I’m talking about the Protege, the car.”

Smrtest man alive, that’s me. S-M-R-T.

How, exactly, would they know?

October 30, 2007, 5:52 pm

Not exactly a major political scandal - more like yet another example of just how centric American thinking is (combined with a touch of they-don’t-know-any-better.)

The short version, for those of you too lazy to read the whole article, is that Disney shot a Come To America tourism video - free, for the State Department and intended to be shipped to embasies and consuls around the world in order to show potential visitors the natural wonders of the United States… including the Horseshoe falls in Niagara, which happen to be on the Canadian side. Which is fine, because really, three falls, same place, whatever - right? Well, no. In order to take the shot of the falls, the camera crew was standing on the Canadian side. You can’t see the falls the way they pictured them unless you are not in the United States. Still, no big deal, right? Well, no. Because when it was pointed out to the State Department, this was their reply.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack could not speak to the scenery in the short film. But he stressed that Niagara Falls “is a shared natural wonder, a gateway for both our countries and anyone looking at the video will understand how proud America is to share it with Canada.”

Short of the voice over saying, “This is from the Canadian side and boy are we proud to share it with them.” I’m not sure how McCormack figures that would work.

His follow-up made it much more clear - in short, he said the tapes were already shipped out around the world. No “whoops”, no “sorry”, just a gloss and a polite “take a hike.”

Oh well. It’s better than the “what are you whining about?” we got over them flying the Canadian flag upside down. The government that is. The average American Joe was pretty apologetic about the whole thing.

Free icons to a good home

October 20, 2007, 2:35 pm

When you work at a desk writing documents all day, you yearn for an excuse to play in Photoshop. My excuse is to make new MSN avatars as often as possible. But since I’m cycling through them, I rarely return to them after their first use. So, I figured it was time to do an icon dump.

Some are images posted by others that I’ve restructured to fit in a 100×100 square. Others I created myself. I have a heaping pile of icons created by others, but they’re not mine to share - just these ones.

Help yourself.
