For reasons that are still unclear, a hybrid Ghostbusters cartoon was produced for the 1988-89 season. The half hour format of the Real Ghostbusters cartoon was kept, but a second show was added, this one aimed at a younger crowd. This second show focused solely on the exploits of Slimer and his unusual (and never seen-before) circle of friends. Who knew Slimer had a life outside of the firehall?

Slimer spent almost every episode trying to escape the clutches of Professor Dweeb and his maniac dog Elizabeth. Occasionally he would tussle with an alley cat, another ghost, or Morris Grout (the owner of the Sedgewick hotel where Slimer was discovered in the first movie). Always willing to help were friends Bud, Rudy, Luigi, the Jr. Ghostbusters, and Chilly Cooper (an ice-cream vendor with a really cool name).

The format wasn't popular enough to survive the one season (27 episodes), however it did cause enough impact to convince Columbia of the need to give Slimer a cameo in Ghostbusters 2.
